Virgo is the sixth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Virgo. In western astrology, the sign is no longer aligned with the constellation as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. In astrology, Virgo is considered a "feminine", negative (introvert) sign. It is also considered an earth sign and is one of four mutable signs. [4] Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury, but Ceres has been strongly suggested as the ruler of Virgo for some modern astrologers.[5][6][7]
Individuals born when the Sun was in this sign are considered Virgo individuals. Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Virgo roughly from August 23 to September 22.[8] Under the sidereal zodiac, it is currently there roughly from September 17 to October 17.
Virgo is the only zodiac sign represented by a female.

According to one interpretation[9], the Virgo constellation depicts Astraea, the virgin daughter of the god Zeus and the goddess Themis. Astraea was known as the goddess of justice, and was identified as this constellation due to the presence of the scales of justice (Libra) nearby, and supposedly ruled the world with her wise ways until mankind became so callous that she returned to the skies, disgusted. Virgo is also identified with Persephone, daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture and guardian of marriage). Persephone was the goddess of innocence and purity, then later on became the Queen of the Underworld, when she was abruptly snatched away by Hades.
Another possible myth is one about Asclepius the god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek mythology. He was the son of Apollo and Coronis. His mother was killed for being unfaithful to Apollo and was laid out on a funeral pyre to be consumed, but the unborn child was rescued from her womb. From this he received the name Asklepios "to cut open." [10] Apollo carried the baby to the centaur Chiron who raised Asclepius and instructed him in the art of healing and hunting.[11]
The astrological symbol of Virgo is said to represent the arms and torso of the virgin holding a sheaf of wheat.
Astrologers assign personality traits to the signs. The following traits are widely associated with Virgo. Note that no scientific research thus far has proved such correlations. Many astrologers consider planetary aspects to hold a key influence[12] which may override sign location and thus concede exceptions.

Many astrologers believe that each of the twelve signs have identifiable physical traits. Some think that physically, individuals born under the sign of Virgo tend to have a graceful figure, a roundish head, delicately-shaped lips, large and clear eyes, small, symmetrical, and refined features, a high forehead, and thin eyebrows. Also, they are thought to usually be of slightly above average height. [16]
Virgo is widely thought to be naturally compatible with the same element signs, Taurus[17] and Capricorn.[17]
There are many variables that determine compatibility in astrology, such as birth dates, birth months, birth years, position of a sign within the Sun, the Moon, Stars, etc. The signs listed as compatible with Virgo do not reflect an individual profile or individual reading as interpreted within astrology, but rather reflect a general guideline and reference to compatibility as dictated by variables such as Qualities and Elements within the Zodiac.
Compatibility is an often misunderstood element of astrology. Compatibility is a multi-faceted look at every aspect of one's Natal chart (full planetary influence at birth), rather than generalizations following a single Sun Sign.[18] The true benefit of compatibility assessment is to see where the strengths and weaknesses lie within relationships. Some may be more difficult than others, but none are really impossible. The branch in astrology dealing with interpersonal compatibilities is called Synastry.[18]
