Family and personal life

Garity was born in Los Angeles, California to actress Jane Fonda and activist/politician Tom Hayden. He is grandson of Henry Fonda, nephew of Peter Fonda, and cousin of Bridget Fonda. His half-sister is Vanessa Vadim. Garity was given his paternal grandmother's surname, and his given names were in reference to two militant activists. According to his father's autobiography:

Naming my son Troy O'Donovan Garity was an act of nostalgia. My wife and I did not want to choose between our public last names, so we selected "Garity" to keep alive my mother's plainly Irish one. "Troy" was an Americanization of the name of a young Vietnamese man accused of conspiring to kill US officials. Though I regret the association, if indeed it was true, at that time all I knew of the Vietnamese Troi was that his death was unusually brave, a gesture of sacrifice against overwhelming odds. [...] O'Donovan" was for a militant nineteenth century Irishman, O'Donovan Rossa. [1]

2006

In 2006 Garity became engaged to Simone Bent, an African-American actress, former bar manager and party planner. Jane Fonda accelerated formalization of the relationship by referring to Simone as her "future daughter in law" and her "son's fiancee" some time before the engagement [2]. Jane, not Troy, picked out the engagement ring and bragged to reporters about doing so. On August 27, 2007, Simone and Troy were married.

Roles

Garity had an uncredited appearance as a young boy in the film On Golden Pond, starring his mother and grandfather. He played his father in the 2000 film Steal This Movie based on the life of Yippie founder Abbie Hoffman. In addition to his breakout role in the Barbershop series, his performance as Barry Winchell in the 2003 film Soldier's Girl earned Garity a Golden Globe nomination for Actor, Mini-series or a Motion Picture Made for Television. Garity stars as Harvey in the Danny Boyle/Alex Garland film Sunshine.
