The Severn Area Rescue Association aka SARA or Severn Rescue provides inshore Rescue Boat services for the River Severn Estuary from Cardiff Bay to Gloucester; and the Rivers Severn, Wye, Monnow and Usk. SARA has Lifeboat & Rescue stations at Beachley, Sharpness, and Wyre Forest. The Association was founded in 1973 and is now the second largest independent lifeboat organisation in the UK, after the RNLI. There have been many disasters on the Severn requiring the assistance of SARA. In addition to Lifeboat and flood related rescues and recoveries, SARA also provides inland, rugged and unstable terrain search & recovery skills(often called Mountain / Cliff Rescue). SARA crew skills include: Urban Search, Mountain & Fell Rescue, Flood Rescue, Swift Water Rescue. SARA is a registered Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre and a Mountain Rescue Council (MRC)Station. SARA cannot be called into action by the general public. SARA is a 999/112 service: Rescue crews are tasked by The UK Coasguard, Police, Fire or Ambulance Services.
The Association is a registered charity and all the membership are volunteers.
