Established in 1973, the Evening Standard British Film Awards are given to outstanding achievement in British film by the British newspaper Evening Standard. The annual ceremony is held at several localities in London, like the Savoy Hotel and The Ivy. In honor of Peter Sellers, there is also a Peter Sellers Award for Comedy for the best British comedies and comedians.
Together with the BAFTAs and the British Independent Film Awards, it is one of the most important film awards in the United Kingdom.

Criteria
The Evening Standard British Film Award was formerly known as Evening News British Film Award. It is a silver Eros statuette. The winners are chosen by a jury of 5 movie critics from a list of all UK-made films and movie performances run in British cinemas in the preceding year.
The awards are given in the following categories: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Technical Achievement, Best Film Score, Most Promising Newcomer, The Alexander Walker Special Award and The Peter Sellers Award for Comedy.

- Best actress: Helena Bonham Carter - Sweeney Todd / Conversations with Other Women
- Best screenplay: Matt Greenhalgh - Control
- Technical achievement: Atonement (cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, production designer Sarah Greenwood, costume designer Jacqueline Durran)
- Best film score: Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
- Most promising newcomer: John Carney - writer/director of Once
- Alexander Walker Special Award: Julie Christie
